Vincent Enyeama; getting better with age.

Super Eagles goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, has again been voted French Ligue One footballer of the month for November. The Lille shot stopper who did not concede a goal in top flight football in the French league in November, won the award ahead of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thauvin. Enyeama. He did not concede a single goal in 1062 minutes of football in the French top flight. He equally scooped the award for the previous month of October.
The 31 year old Nigerian international and Super Eagles vice captain have been on a high. The player is expected to lead the Super Eagles of Nigeria to the World Cup in Brazil next year. Nigerian coach Stephen Keshi will definitely see this as a morale booster knowing that his number one goalkeeper is in top form at the moment and will be praying his steller form continues.
Since taking over the number one spot in the Lille line up, the former Enyimba and Maccabi goal tender have not looked back. Churning out eye catching displays week in week out. Enyeama at 31,joins the league of goalkeepers who defied age to be on top form. Edwin Van da Saar, David Seaman and Andoni Zubizaretta showed the world what they could do despite their ages, and today, Enyeama, Gigi Buffon, Petr Cech, Pepe Reina etc are still on top of their games.

UEFA Champions League round of 16 draws.

On the heels of the World Cup draws made some weeks ago, the draws for the round of 16 for the UEFA Champions league have just been concluded.

Manchester City vs Barcelona
Olympiakos vs Manchester United
AC Milan vs Athletico Madrid
Bayern Leverkusen vs PSG
Galatasaray vs Chelsea
Schalke 04 vs Real Madrid
Zenith vs Borussia Dortmund
Arsenal vs Bayern Munich

On paper, the star games are expected to be the games between Man. City and Barcelona, AC Milan and Athletico Madrid, Arsenal and Bayern Munich. Though that singular factor that makes football tick being the unpredictable nature of the game, could sway the other games and make them mouth watering.
Against popular opinion however, I believe it is not yet uhuru for Barcelona. Manchester City's current form is terrifying. Their attack is simply scary. Therefore I think it will be a straight up battle between City and Barca.  There is equally the Manuel Pellegrini factor. He is an experienced champions league manager having managed Real Madrid and Malaga. Tata Martino on the other hand, is new to the European waters. Though he has made a name for himself in South America, the European ground is a different ball game. Though it must be noted that with the strength of character Tata possesses, Barca can be said to be in safe hands.
Next up is the Arsenal and Bayern Munich game. Arsenal can be said to be on a high, despite their loss to Napoli and the tennis scoreline they were handed by a rampaging Manchester City. Arsenal can boast of the most complete midfield. The arrival of Mesut Ozil being responsible for the overflowing confidence amongst Gooners.  It is pertinent to note here however, that the same action man, Ozil, has so far been found wanting in key up tight games. The games against Manchester United, Napoli and Manchester City being reference points. Arsenal's progression can be strengthened if Ozil turns up against the Bavarians. In my opinion, the most important Arsenal midfielder is Mathieu Flamini. If he remains fit, Arsenal will have a good shot at Bayern. The Bavarians in my humble opinion has the most complete midfield in the world. Their depth is horrifyingly orgasmic. Schweinsteiger, Lahm, Thiago, Shaqiri, Muller, Gotze, Kroos....etc. Note that I did not even mention Ribery and Robben.  That is how deep their team is. However, a dejavu of last year's champions league between both clubs is still fresh in the mind of Gooners and is the point on which their hope is hinged. Football is a craftily beautiful game. Very unpredictable, which is why we all love the game.
The UEFA Champions league offers football lovers worldwide a hot dish of the beautiful game. Come 2014, the football community await the restart of the champions league, which in itself will serve as a preamble to the biggest sporting event in the world, the FIFA World Cup holding in Brazil.

How David Moyes can better Manchester United.

Manchester United have so far had a nightmarish season. Since David Moyes took over the reins at United, the club has had a somewhat catastrophic slump.  Currently placed ninth on the EPL table, the club's nightmares continued after Yohan Cabaye helped Newcastle inflict a second successive home defeat, coming on the heels of a rare Old Trafford defeat by Roberto Martinez' Everton. The turn of events in Old Trafford has gotten to the marrows of Old Trafford faithfuls.
People have so often talked about United's deficiency in midfield. But a lot have failed to recognise the defensive frailties. The famed central defensive pairing of Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic is no longer effective. Neither of them can play consecutively any more, especially Rio Ferdinand. Because of recent injuries, both have resorted more to making use of their on the ball senses than sheer energy, again, especially Rio Ferdinand. Vidic can be said to still posses the steel he was known for,but like Rio, have lost pace. Moyes should start another central defensive era. Phil Jones is hugely talented in the noted area. But because of his utility nature that sees him deployed to either midfield or right back, his learning process in central defence is impeded. He should be played regularly alongside either Rio or Vidic so he will mature into the role. Evans, currently mister consistent in the central defence role is viewed as his future partner in the heart of United defence. Also, I don't feel Leighton Baines is the correct heir to Patrice Evra. I don't even think United need to go into the market for a left full back. Remembering how difficult it was for Evra to settle into the United squad after his move from Monaco, I can't help but think that Alex Buttner or Fabio Da Silva can be that left full back heir.
As regards the midfield, United need to get the services of a creative midfielder. The thought of Mr. Consistent, Michael Carrick and Lallana, Marco Reus or even an Ilkay Gundogan in the heart of United midfield is purely orgasmic.  This way, Rooney and Van Persie will concentrate on their roles. Manchester United equally need to sort out the issue of Wayne Rooney's contract which runs out summer of 2015. With Wayne's current form, United should offer him a new contract. Allowing him go is something they shouldn't want to do. Like the sale of Van Persie to them by Arsenal, it will be like selling your most potent gun to your rival. Worthy of note is the issue of panic buy. Moyes should not allow himself to be coerced into panic buying. Fellaini, a summer panic buy is a typical example of what panic buying can cause in a team. Marouane Fellaini will come good some time. Not just yet.
Manchester United will most definitely do away with unwanted players. Without naming names, there are some players, especially in the midfield who won't feature prominently for United again. This way, space will be opened up for new arrivals and better use of current employees. United fans may not agree with me on my next point but it is just my humble opinion. Shinji Kagawa. In my humble opinion, Kagawa can be better used by Moyes. Either playing in the hole or drifting in from the flank but not functioning as a winger. When I see United play without sleekness and Kagawa is on the bench or even in the stands,I weep. Not even the legendary Sir Alex can convince me that Kagawa doesn't have the what it takes to flourish in the EPL. If players like David Silva, Kanu Nwankwo, David De Gea, Oscar and co could adapt to the requirements of the EPL, then Shinji can. He needs to be handed games. A lot of it. Constant games will build his confidence.
In my opinion, United cannot win the league this season. A point i opined at the beginning of the present season. They are a club in transition. Moyes should be afforded the rare luxury of time. If at the end of the season he qualifies for the champions league or even the Europa Cup, United faithfuls should be grateful. For a club used to playing and challenging for top honours every season for the past twenty plus years, I am sure the present feeling in the United camp is very strange. The team should sort out what has to be sorted out and next season or the season after, they might have their darling Manchester United on the roll again.

World Cup draws concluded.

The football community shifted their focus away from the various leagues, the world over and centred on Brazil. It wasn't just because of the World Cup to be hosted next year in the South American country but because of the World Cup draws holding in the centre of the amazons. As usual, the ceremony was full of pomp and pageantry characteristic of FIFA organised ceremonies. With old time footballers, administrators and officials in attendance, the draws were held.
GROUP A: Brazil, Croatia, Mexico, Cameroun.
GROUP B: Spain, Holland, Chile, Australia.
GROUP C: Colombia, Greece, Cote d'Ivore, Japan
GROUP D: Uruguay, Costa Rica, England, Italy.
GROUP E: Swtzerland, Ecuador, France, Honduras.
GROUP F: Argentina, Bosnia, Iran, Nigeria.
GROUP G: Germany, Portugal, Ghana, USA.
GROUP H; Belgium, Algeria, Russia, Korea.

Before the draws, FIFA and the Brasilia Football Federation have tried to allay fears of unpreparedness on the part of the hosts as issues of stadium collapse came up. This is also coming at the heels of a nationwide protests in Brazil against the hosting of the World Cup amidst gross economic imbalance in the country. A fact the Brazilian government have always swept under the carpet.
Another issue that trailed the draws was that of the parameter used by FIFA in seeding teams, which saw Switzerland emerge above supposed superiors. Many argued that the Swiss, under Ottmer Hitzfield, have been very conservative in their execution of especially friendly games. An approach that saw them emerge a seeded team. A country like Italy, for instance, played more games this calender year than the Swiss and the parameter on ground went against them. FIFA rankings have generated many issues in the past as people don't trust the rankings. It is viewed by majority as baseless or I dare say, biased. Though with no evidence to the latter.
Despite the controversy, the draws have been made. The entire world look forward to the biggest sporting event, come June,2015. Brazil, famed for its enticing beaches, beautiful women, very high football pedigree and a warm, welcoming culture will sure open its doors to the world as they converge for the festival. The Samba country can't wait to roll out the samba.

Eagles in Brazil; maters arising.

After the first leg of the World Cup qualifiers in Addis Ababa, the Super Eagles were one leg in Brazil for the World Cup holding next year. The 1-2 victory, courtesy of a brace by Fenerbache's Emmanuel Emenike, was good enough to fly the Eagles to Brazil. Therefore, what every Nigerian football follower needed o see from the Super Eagles was a relaxed game in Calabar during the return leg. On a day Victor Moses scored from the penalty spot and Obinna Nsofor whipped in a marvelous free kick to seal a two nil victory at the UJ Esuene Stadium, Calabar, the deal was signed, sealed and delivered. The game wasn't exactly electrifying as the Eagles benefited from a controversial decision by the referee and had a penalty kick awarded to them. A spot kick that was duly dispatched by Victor Moses. As pointed out, few expected the game to be electrifying. No realistic person expected the game to be soaked with tension as the Eagles needed just a draw to cement the qualification spot.
One positive Nigerians have taken from the Super Eagles under Keshi is the beautiful cord struck by Mikel Obi and Onazi Ogenyi in the centre of midfield. The duo have been able to read and understand themselves so much that the flow of game between the two instill hope in Nigerians. The midfield seem to be the core of Keshi's team. Little wonder then, the abundance of talented and effective midfielders in the team. Nosa Igiebor when fit, can be worked into the team. Sunday Mba, John Ogu, Gabriel Reuben and co can equally provide the much needed depth and cover for the midfield. However, where Nigerians see a lapse is in the defense. For instance, in the game against Ethiopia in Calabar, opinions hold that Kenneth Omeruo shouldn't have started the game. This is simply because his match fitness level is suspect. He has been out for months due to injury, and recently resumed training fully. Therefore, I think he shouldn't have started the game. The Eagles gaffer should have stuck with Godfrey Oboabona and Azubuike Egwuekwe in the heart of defence. Also, Efe Ambrose seem to always forget that he is primarily a defender. Yes, modern football demands that full backs join attack occasionally, but it shouldn't be to the detriment of the team. Echiejile on the left flank equally have same issue, but it is not as pronounced as Efe Ambrose. Sometimes he will join the attack, and when he or the team looses the ball, he is found wanting on his defensive duties. The one person who seem fully composed in the defense line is Godfrey Oboabona. Generally, the defence line is unorganized. Keshi has to find a solution to the disorganization in the defense. The defenders are good individually, but then, football is a team sport. They have to be together as a unit. A club like Barcelona does not have a fantastic defense line. But their organization at the back has become legendary. Most of their attacks are built from the back. That said, the technical technical crew is expected to find a solution to the defensive issues.
Equally worthy of note is the seeming lack of technicality, generally. I don't know exactly what Danuel Amokachi's job description states, but Keshi seem alone is his own area. I don't know whether to suggest that a technical person be employed and attached to work under Keshi, but I sure know we lack in the mentioned area. This however, is something that can be worked out by Keshi. Technical inputs of men like Khalika under Siasia, Karanka under Mourinho and AVB under Mourinho saw their respective teams excel technically. Also, one wonders what the job of the team psychologist is. Because all of a sudden, Brown Ideye have become a shadow of himself. He may not have been a Rooneylike or Ibrahimoviclike kind of player, but he is not the player we used to know. Something is wrong. It is not my job to find out and help him regain confidence and form. It is someone's job. The person should be made to do it. We can't be inviting players and then after they give their best and there is a loss of form or player is injured, then we discard him or her. Efforts should be put into our players' all round development.
If we cross our t's and dot our i's, we will have a glorious World Cup. If not, we will come back  with the same old story. Nigerians are already beginning to have this feeling that the team can go beyond a certain stage at the World Cup in Brazil. Imagine then, if the team goes all out and make a resounding impact and who knows, go all they way. The feeling is purely orgasmic. All hands must be on deck to ensure a fruitful World Cup for Nigeria and the Super Eagles. The players too, need a successful outing as it will enrich their CV's and further enhance their market values. As we await the December World Cup draws, Nigerians remain optimistic.

Golden Eaglets; what next?

Nigerians are yet to recover fully from the euphoria surrounding the Golden Eaglets victory at the recently concluded U-17 World Cup in Abou Dhabi. Nigeria is a football crazy country. Week after week, Nigerians stay glued to their television sets and wait to see their favorite Nigerian and foreign football stars. The average Nigerian has an affiliation to at least one European or Nigerian football club. Either because of who is playing where or because of the club itself. Some ladies have even been known to follow the club their partners support while some young men tend to follow whichever club a prospective lady friend supports. However it comes, the average Nigerian loves football. It is therefore not surprising how Nigerians celebrated the U-17 World Cup victory.
The Manu Garba boys did Nigeria proud. They seem to have had the expectation of Nigerians at heart as they played their games. For the first time, Nigerians saw really young lads at the cadet level out to do the country proud and make a name for themselves.
Now that the tournament has come and gone, with Nigeria crowned champions, the question now is ; what next? They boys were rewarded financially by the Federal Government. Nigerians are happy with the team. Some have returned to their families and others to their academies to chart the next course. They were besieged by scouts in Abou Dhabi. Some of these scouts are for real and would help the player grow while unfortunately, some of them are just after their own pockets. Whichever is the case, they have to carefully choose their next lines. An alliance with the wrong agent and their career ends even before it starts. A lot of former Nigerian youth internationals disappeared from the radar after a very promising start. To avoid this, all hands must be on deck. NFF should monitor the growth of the boys. Their movement from the various academies to club sides should be a smooth transition devoid of the drama that accompanied some of our former youth internationals. It is a pity that Nigerian club sides don't have a sound youth system, otherwise some of them could still be snapped up by these Nigerian club sides from where they will grow their games. Credit to the League Management Committee, the recently concluded season in the Glo Nigeria Premier League is the best, ever witnessed in the country. Therefore, some of the very organized clubs, which I dare say are very few, less than three, could still sign some of these boys. However, this should only be the case where any of the players is having issues signing a club abroad. Truth be told, these boys have greater  chances to mature their games abroad. Ramon Azeez, captain of the 2009 silver winning U-17 team is gradually developing into a solid holding midfielder in UD Almeira of Spain. Same is the case with Onazi Ogenyi of SS Lazio in the Serie A. Having said that, a move abroad will help develop their game. But if the move doesn't materialise at the expected time, a move to a Nigerian club side will not be out of place, instead of staying back at the various academies or even at home waiting to be scouted by a top European side. Also, a move to a not so highly placed foreign side should not be considered the ultimate. Being cadet players, growing in a moderate outfit will not be out of place. All these should be carefully monitored by the Nigerian Football Federation. The boys should be steered out of the clutches of greedy agents who are only interested in their bank accounts and not the players' growth.
Nigerians in the football community hope not to witness the drama of the past where agents and club sides/academies fight over issues of player rights. This, impedes in more ways than one, the players growth. Stakeholders should iron out such issues amicably and with a great sense of reasoning. Football enthusiasts want to be able to see the tournaments MVP, Kelechi Iheanacho, Yahaya, Eze, Awoniyi, Samuel Okon and indeed all of them play at he highest stage in the coming years. With humility and hard work, every single player in the team is expected to have a beautiful career.

Golden Eaglets, really golden.

Cheered on by the Japan '93 U-17 World Cup winning captain, Kanu Nwankwo, the Manu Garba tutored boys defeated the El Tri 3- 0 inside the Zayed Stadium Abu Dhabi.
The Mexicans clearly dominated the opening proceedings but always met a very resolute Nigerian defence that refused to succumb to the Mexican onslaught. Nigeria launched an attack and an Awoniyi pass meant for Yahaya was clearly placed by Erick Aguirre into his own net. Mexico kept coming at the Nigerian side but couldn't get the much needed breakthrough. After the restart, Kelechi Iheanacho scored Nigeria's second and during the dying minutes of the game, Muhammed scored a free kick to seal victory for the Golden Eaglets.
In a game and competition that saw Iheanacho deservedly crowned the Most Valuable Player of the tournament and going home with the silver ball, and Dele Alampasu, the goalie carting the Golden gloves, Nigerians were once again given a reason to smile. From the first match the Eaglets played against the Mexicans in the group stage, a game they won 6 - 1, Nigerians were offered glimpse of hope by the artistry and perceived youthfulness in the boys. After their second group match against 3 - 3, hope of a good outing was almost established. Many people noted that the three previous victories Nigeria had at U-17 level were all recorded on Asian soils, and therefore, superstitiously gave this one to the Eaglets. To the superstitious Nigerian, the victory came as no surprise. To the realistic Nigerian, it came as no surprise too. Difference being that the realistic camp saw the zeal and determination to win in the team and expected the gold to land Abuja in a few days. And none of the schools of thought were disappointed. Today, after yesterday's victory, Nigeria is the only country to have won the U-17 World Cup a record four  times, scoring twenty six goals in the process.
From the goalkeeper, Dele Alampasu to the last person on the bench, the team was adjudged fantastic by the Nigerian football community. The only scratch observed in their game was the anxiety shown by them at certain times during some matches. In the game against Sweden and also against Uruguay, this was most evident. Moving the ball from the defence to attack was so fast and hurriedly done that sometimes, the midfield were caught looking for the bal and not given the chance to express themselves. But even at those times, Manu Garba was always on hand to calm them down and ask them to relax play, thereby involving the creative and hardworking midfield in the team's general play. When calm, they dictated play and pulled the strings effectively to the delight of spectators.
Once again, sports, and I dare say, football, have proved to be the only factor that bring Nigerians together. It is in such times that ethnicity and religious affiliations are relegated to the background and everyone becomes Nigerian. Even as we are sure that the political class in the country will be looking for ways to include this Golden Eaglets victory into their campaign, the actual football lovers choose to revel in the golden moment, offered us by the Golden Eaglets and ignore the predatory Nigerian politician.
Congratulations, Golden Eaglets. Congratulations, Nigeria. Congratulations, football, for finding a home in Nigeria.

Monsieur Wenger, still winning.

Call it a stroke of luck or a bag of it, Arsene Wenger is rolling on a high, right now. With Arsenal having been trophyless for several seasons and the patience of Gooners around the world running thin, Wenger knew he had to get the gun running or continue on the fire path of Gooners. Having previously made midfield signings of Mikel Arteta and Santi Carzola, he knew something was still missing. Arsenal fans kept yearning for trophies and at least one marquee signing. During the last transfer window, Monsieur Wenger brought in Mathieu Flamini on a free transfer from AC Milan and then made the mega bucks signing of Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid. Football followers all over the world were shocked to the marrows with the mega bucks signing of Ozil and saw his arrival as a possible key to Arsenal's trophy haulage.
Apart from the losses to Aston Villa and Borussia Dortmund, Arsenal have been riding on a high. The team seem to have woken up from an almost decade long trophy slumber. Aaron Ramsey have hit form, Oliver Giroud is scoring, Sczesny has been brilliant in between the sticks, the defenders seem to have erected a great wall of defence, Santi Carzola is playing well as usual. In other terms, Arsene Wenger have gotten it right, so far. The multi lingual frenchman has so far, gotten his team firing on all cylinders. The icing on the cake was the 2 - 0 victory over Liverpool at the weekend. Goals from Santi Carzola and the in form Aaron Ramsey saw off the men from Anfield. It is no secret that Arsenal have the most complete midfield in the EPL, barring or including injuries. No disrespect to Arsenal who were miles good, the Liverpool midfield seemed to be clueless and lacked bearing. And so, couldnt answer the questions posed by Arteta, Ozil, Ramsey and Rosicky.
So far, the team is on fire. But then, the football community still have memories of inconsistencies by Arsenal. If that should be the case, the dejavu will be strong and killing, for Gooners. But barring inconsistency, this present Arsenal team is destined for a trophy haulage. Arsenal fans the world over all believe the team's good run is because of the arrival of Mesut Ozil. It is true, to an extent. The assist king has since gone five matches without an assist. He was completely hidden by BVB's Bender in their UCL clash. But credit to him, he has completely lit up Arsenal's game. Since the departure of Patrick Vieira, Arsenal struggled to find an adequate replacement for the talismanic holding midfielder. A role Alex Song was beginning to get used to before his infamous sale to Barcelona. But the fans who have eyes to really see, have heaved a sigh of relief with the arrival of, and effective display by Mathieu Flamini. The Frenchman has in the games he played, convinced fans and given solid assurances to the Arsenal back line of his uncompromising protection. Arsenal's quest for trophy can be said to depend on their midfield and fitness of Mesut Ozil, but it even depends more on Flamini's fitness.
If the team keep playing the way they have been, then we could see the Arsene Wenger tutored team lay hands on a major trophy. Something the fans will cry for joy over.

NFF and Keshi's unpaid salary.

The Nigerian Football Federation continues her legendary show of shame. One cannot help but wonder if the office is cursed in any way, because from the days of the Nigerian Football Association,  it has been from one show of shame to the other. Today, the story making the rounds is the issue of the national team coach, Stephen Keshi's unpaid salary. From both confirmed and unconfirmed sources, Stephen Keshi hasn't been paid for over seven months. What can be more ridiculous?! And then, the national team handler whom the same federation and her cronies have sometimes made out to be a stubborn man have kept on working. Diligently, I dare say. And then an NFF spokesperson comes out to say that even though he hasn't been paid, that the federation have been taking care of his other bills. And that moreover, some NFF staff have yet to receive their salaries too. That's a typical Nigerian style of defending stupidity with extreme idiocy. Super Eagles staged a mini protest over unpaid allowances and the NFF cried foul and even blamed the coaching crew for not 'holding back' the players. At the end of the day, some unrealistic and naive recommendations were made by the Adeniyi led panel. So sad.
It is a pity that the singular factor that bring Nigerians together, football, is constantly used as a toy by those who are supposed to know better. Instead of focusing on football as an instrument for peace and development in the country, intense politics is brought in to play a much unwanted and devilish role. That goes to show how our acclaimed leaders view us. I dare say that Nigeria is cursed in the area of leadership but making their hatred known with such alacrity is what seem to be disheartening. ASUU would have gone on strike long before now if they were in Keshi's shoes. NLC would have organized a nationwide anti government rally. Okonjo Iweala would have submitted a supplementary budget if her own pay was directly affected. But because it is 'just' Stephen Keshi's salary, nobody gives a chicken tooth. Keshi is reported to have said that while he was Malian and Togolese team handler, he got his salary before the end of any given month. Well, what our supremo doesn't realize is that 'This Is Nigeria'. And then so much pressure has been on the man for a long time now as regards the team's performance at the Confeds and also the World Cup qualifiers.
The NFF have as usual and expected, given lack of funds as the reason behind Keshi's unpaid salary. Then we ask; was his salary not budgeted for at the beginning of the year? The case of funds going into execution of U-17 World Cup and all that is pure crap. This singular excuse shows extreme inefficiency on their part and then in a civilized society, the entire board will be in hot soup. Unless of course their is something they are not telling us. A situation where rumors abound about NFF and their family members forming part of the contingent to tournaments is worrisome. As unconfirmed as it is, I know of an African proverb that says that there is no smoke without fire. There is an element of truth in it, no matter how micro it may seem. On a daily basis, the NFF exhibit a high level of irresponsibility in the discharge of their assigned and assumed duties. They have become a lord to themselves and constantly toy with the reasoning of football loving Nigerians. The other day I read a report that says Sani Lulu is preparing to run for the highest chair in the glass house. What a shame. Recycling. As with other sectors of the economy, we keep recycling. That alone, is a sure reason we have remained on one spot for long. Thank God NFF mistakenly hired Keshi, otherwise our football will still be in the pit till date.
I, and indeed several others are not expecting any good from the present NFF, but they should at least quit playing games with Nigerians. The issue is now before the National Sports Commission. Nigerians await the outcome of the escalation. If it were possible, I am sure the poor, football loving Nigerians will contribute towards Keshi's salary! That is how much we love football!

Kano Pillars, worthy champions of the Glo Nigeria Premier League

The curtain was drawn on the Glo Nigerian Premier League 2012/2013 season yesterday across the various stadia in the country. Kano Pillars, despite the loss to Lobi Stars of Makurdi were crowned champions even as their closest rival, Bayelsa United equally lost by a lone goal to Gombe United. Unlike the controversies that trailed last season where the Baribote Rumson led Nigeria Premier League board cooked the controversy that made Enugu Rangers loose the six points garnered against Ocean Boys and the eventual winners, Kano Pillars lost the one point garnered against Ocean Boys and the title handed on a platter of gold to Kano Pillars, this season was almost devoid of such issues. The only major talking point being the disparity between the League Management Committee and Nigerian Football Federation's decision on the award of points arising from Enyimba's visit to Kano which ended as supporters invaded d field. The LMC ruled and awarded maximum points to Enyimba but the NFF overruled and asked for a replay at the Lokoja Stadium. A game Pillars went on to win in Extra time. In fairness to Pillars, they have been outstanding all season so the win came as no surprise to the Nigerian football community. What however worries observers is the seeming no cordial relationship between the League Management Committee and the Nigerian Football Federation. Apart from the above, the just concluded season was all square.
Kano Pillars became only the second team to win back to back league titles in ten years after the feat was originally put in place by the all conquering Enyimba side of the Orji Uzo Kalu years as Abia state governor. Pillars scored a lot of goals and won a lot of crucial games. Coming on the back of the cash and car rewards received by the players and management of Kano Pillars for their victory last season by the Kano State government, the team was motivated to keep the pressure on their nearest rivals. On the final day of the season that saw Pillars loose 0 - 2 to Lobi Stars, Bayelsa United lost 0-1 to Gombe United, Enyimba defeated Sharks 1-0 while El Kanemi lost to Rangers 1-0 in Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, the table arranged itself at the end of the day. The results not withstanding, Pillars topped the table, followed closely by Enyimba, Bayelsa United and El Kanemi. Relegated teams are Kwara United, ABS, Wikki Tourists and 3SC.
It is still noteworthy that Kano Pillars are one of the few teams in the Glo Premier League that exhibit beautiful football artistry. With a confident back line, a hardworking midfield and a NOT goal shy attack, they mesmerized opponents. They did not loose a single game at home. A record they have had for many years. That record, join Enyimba's record of not conceding a single goal at home as the most prominent records of the just concluded season. Nigerian league followers are expecting a better organized league next season owing to the recent deal signed by the LMC and Supersports.
Indeed, Kano Pillars are worthy champions.

Eagles labour over Ethiopia in a high altitude win.

The day was 13th October, the stadium was Addis Stadium in Addis Ababa and the game was a Brazil 2014 world cup qualifier. The hard breathing game was played under the very high altitude of Addis Ababa. Pundits had said before the game that attitude and not altitude would win the game. And how right they were proven.
The game progressed with the Ethiopians dictating play. They were so effective in play that observers predicted a tough time for the Super Eagles whose players were mostly based  outside Africa, playing week in week out in conditions the sharp opposite of what was attainable in Europe. The Nigerian team could boast of experience as only just one home based player, Warri Wolves captain and central defender, Azubuike Egwuekwe made the starting eleven. The Ethiopians ran riot over the Super Eagles midfield as the Nigerians failed to get a grip on the game but with no result to show for it. Salahdin Said kept the Eagles on their toes through out and had a ball cleared off the goal line by Turkey based Godfrey Oboabona and the referee ruled against the goal standing, to the chagrin of Ethiopians. Thirteen minutes into the second half, Samson Asefa caught Vincent Enyeama off guard as his intended cross was allegedly brought out from beyond the goal line and subsequently adjudged a goal. Nigeria's Victor Moses was uncharacteristically out of the game even as he bluffed a one on one situation with the Ethiopian goal keeper. Minutes later he was substituted together with the equally ineffective Oduamadi and Nosa Igiebor came on with Brown Ideye. With Nosa's introduction, Mikel Obi assumed a feeer role as he started pulling the strings with Nosa in central midfield even as the workaholic Onazi Ogenyi gave cover to the back line. Nigeria's game became fluid as they pushed for an equalizer which eventualy came when Emmanuel Emenike drifted in from the left flank and unleashed a right footed shot into the Ethiopian net. As the game progressed, the Eagles kept pushing for the winner. In the final minutes of the game, Emenike was released and he was clearly headed for goal but was dragged down by Abebaw Butako. Emenike took the resultant penalty himself even as he gently slotted home into the bottom left corner for the winner.
The win sees the Super Eagles as having one leg and three toes in Brazil already but have a job to do in Calabar to cement the spot. Enthusiasts however kept wondering why Keshi opted to start Oduamadi in midfield ahead of the in form Nosa Igiebor. A tactic that clearly backfired. The game changed when Nosa was introduced as his introduction freed up Mikel and awarded him the space to surge forward.
Emmanuel Emenike, arguably the best striker in Africa presently broke millions of Ethiopian hearts and won millions of Nigerian hearts.  The return leg in Calabar is on paper, expected to be easier for the Champions of Africa. This is mainly because the obvious fatigue caused by the altitude in Ethiopia that probably affected the Eagles' game is expected to be absent. Though it is expected to be a level playing ground, the Super Eagles who triumphed over the Ethiopians due to immense experience and attitude are expected to win again, all things being equal. The water break the Ethiopians took, to the surprise of the Super Eagles will not be necessary. Nosa is expected to make the starting eleven ahead of Oduamadi.
The Nigerian national team have progressed steadily since Stephen Keshia took over. Nigerian football community have so much confidence in his ability to fashion out a solid team for them and so far, he hasn't failed. Football, is clearly the biggest unifier amongst Nigerians. The success of the national teams bring the citizens together and for the duration of a football match and after, Nigeria is actually one.

Focus: Nosa Igiebor

The Real Betis of Spain midfielder has been the cynosure of eyes in the Spanish outfit. I was glued to the television set as i watched the Real Madrid vs Real Betis game. Nosa Igiebor fearlessly ran the Betis midfield against the best midfielders that Madrid paraded on the day. His box to box movement was eye catching. The way he changes pace was a beauty to behold. Explosive. Tireless. Fearless. Explorative. He was a collosus on the day. From the way the Real Madrid team started chasing him down from the half our mark it was obvious they didnt note him down as a threat before the commencement of the game. He hit the bar with a header and played in front of Madrid's Diego Lopez and announced his presence to the consternation of the Real Madrid super stars. Just recently in Betis' game against Villareal where he scored, he again shone like a million stars. He mesmerised the yellow submarines who have his compatriot and Super Eagles skillful striker, Ike Uche, with his explosive runs across midfield.
The Super Eagles head coach, Stephen Keshi Stephen Keshi must have noticed his recent exploits as he invited the player who last featured for the Super Eagles during the AFCON, for the next Super Eagles engagement. The Nigerian team which boasts of such talents as Mikel Obi, Onazi Ogenyi, Sunday Mba, Fengor Ogude, Gabriel Reuben, John Ogu etc in the central midfield now have another serious contender in the person of Nosa Igiebor. Keshi, known for giving every one equal opportunity to prove his worth will no doubt give the Real Betis henchman a chance to cement a place in the already studded Super Eagles midfield.  How he employs the boys in his team is left to be seen. Nigerians however have confidence in the Super Eagles Supremo who himself was a Super Eagles regular in his playing days. Nigerians, a large contingent in the football community will watch to see how the Super Eagles midfield pan out and where the trusted coach employs Nosa Igiebor. From his initial troubled times in Betis, Nosa has risen to become a steady presence in the Spanish outfit.

Opinion: Mourinho and Moyes so far.

The English Premier League 2013/2014 is underway, yet, some clubs are yet to take off. Many football followers expected Mourinho to be flying high with his Chelsea side by now. But instead, he is yet to even take off. Chelsea and football fans all over the world have not stopped wondering why Jose Mourinho resorted to making Juan Mata a fringe player so far. Mata, voted Chelsea's best player of the last two seasons have been confined to the bench by Jose. And have showered high praises on Eden Hazrard. Mourinho, a man who seem to love controversy said that "Mata needs to step up in his defensive duties". What an excuse to bench a man who is known for tearing defence lines open with his passes and runs! What more, Jose released Romelu Lukaku on loan to Everton allegedly after his penalty miss against Bayern Munich in the European Super Cup and opted to bring in a Samuel Eto'o. Well, we have all seen how Eto'o have fitted in at Stamford Bridge and how Lukaku is on a beautiful stroll at Everton. Known for courting controversies, it is yet to be seen how Mourinho ends the season; if he will be sacked half way through or finish on a high.
David Moyes, referred to by Manchester United fans as the 'chosen one', owing to the fact that he was chosen by the legendary Sir Alex Ferguson as his successor, is yet to come to terms that he is in one of the biggest clubs in the world. United fans are worried that Shinji Kagawa may not be favoured by Moyes as he continously keep him on the fringes and prefer the so far very ineffective Ashley Young. Also, his constant use of Rio Ferdinand against pacey opposition worries United fans, evidenced in the games against City and Westbromwich Albion where they both lost as Rio Ferdinand ran like an animated fossil in a bid to catch up with the tempo of the game. In the views of every United fan, the club had a horrible transfer business run. Making an impossible move for Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas was seen as the circus of the year. A move no one expected to be a success. Ilkay Gundogan and Lars Bender, proven box to box midfielders were there and Moyes kept up with his wild goose chase. So far, United is paying dearly for the circus. Fellaini, United's only signing is yet to gel with the team.
The two managers have been getting it wrong. Everyone expected Moyes to make mistakes, yes. But not to commit one murder after the other. Mourinho? He spoke a lot so people expected better from him . It however seem the Chelsea supremo is gradually getting it right again. Mikel Obi, highly talented Nigerian midfielder is beginning to get games and has proved every doubter wrong. I dare say that Jose Mourinho took a cue from how Nigerian national team  coach, Stephen Keshi used Mikel to direct affairs during the last AFCON and Confeds. Mourinho must find a way to accomodate Mata in his team. He could be that spark that has been missing in the team.
We still have a long way to go in the league, but what Managers do now will determine their standing by May, next year.

My take on the Super Eagles 'code of conduct'.

From when I was a kid, the NFF, then NFA, has been the bane of Nigerian football. Nigerians had no faith in the NFA so much that they were nicknamed No Future Ambition. The game, idolized by all; old and young, male and female, has been a political toy in the hands of  grossly corrupt and incompetent Football administrators in the country. The manner in which the men and women of the Glass House run football is very appalling.
In the days of Stephen Keshi as the Super Eagles skippo, he was accused by the football house as running a mafia in the team. Sunday Oliseh was accused of being a rebel leader because he stood his ground against reneging on agreements by the never-straight NFF. Today, Vincent Enyeama and Mikel Obi have been booked by NFF for having a stand on bonus issues. A panel was set up, led by an honorable gentleman, Olusegun Adeniyi, to look into the bonus row. Amongst other things, his panel recommended that the Eagles should not be paid bonus for any match the outcome is a draw and proposed a players' code of conduct. On the former, one asks; where a draw determines Nigeria's participation in an event, say the world cup, so the players will not be paid? Even if the draw is deemed to be unimportant, the boys still won't be paid? On both cases, the recommendation of the panel, above anything else is selfish. On the latter, why on earth will you not pay players because they slugged out a draw? A lot of workers report to office by 10 am, leave before closing time and at the end of the month they receive a bumper salary.
Another question that begs an answer is, who draws up the said code of conduct? The NFF? In as much as I am for good players behaviour while in camp, I don't subscribe to primary-school-like COC where adult, bread winning footballers are treated like kids. Also, I hope the code of conduct will equally lay down guidelines for the NFF to follow. A situation where NFF officials sent to prosecute matches abroad are two times the number of players and technical crew combined is highly irresponsible. Quite frankly, i believe the NFF should not be allowed to come up with a COC to bear down on the players in a master-slave relationship where the NFF is the master and overlord, even though they are the highest football running body in the country. However it is done, the interest of the players should be considered. Fact remains that the NFF has over the years, proved to be an irresponsible body. A body comprised of square pegs in round holes. To solve the issue of bonus rows within the Eagles, the NFF should look inwards, eschew selfishness and corruption. When Nigerians see that NFF is now a 'changed body', erring players will be castigated by football loving Nigerians themselves.
Until we see otherwise, it remains both a fact and a truth that the problem of Nigerian football is the Nigerian Football Federation.

Adeniyi Panel submits report on Super Eagles bonus row.

The panel set up by the Honorable Minister of Sports, Bolaji Abdullahi, headed by Olusegun Adeniyi to look into the bonus row that almost hampered Super Eagles participation in the Confederations Cup held in Brazil. The crisis started just after the Super Eagles played a 1 - 1 draw with Namibia, in Windhoek.
In his submission, the report fingered Vincent Enyeama and Mikel Obi as the chief actors from the players side; Super Eagles Coach, Stephen Keshi and also the NFF. Olusegun Adeniyi submitted that the players were contacted via text messages which were never replied. That only the out of favour Joseph Yobo called to state his stand on the matter. They also implied that the Eagles were handsomely rewarded for their AFCON conquest just months earlier and therefore should not have chosen to 'embarrass' the country. They blamed the Super Eagles technical crew for 'looking the other way' during the crisis and only blamed the NFF for handling communication of their decisions to the players beforehand wrongly.
In black and white, Nigerians are hypocrites. ASUU is on strike today because according to them the Federal Government is yet to implement an agreement they reached years ago. Civil servants won't bat an eyelid before going on strike if owed salaries or allowances. Factory workers will down tools when wages are not paid. Yet, the Super Eagles should not complain or protest when owed allowances or treated unjustly. At least, that is the picture Nigerians were presented with. What does the bonus owed them have to do with the reward they got when they won AFCON? If it true that text message were sent to some players, then I think it is wrong. What happened to direct communication? Even if it is considered a waste of public funds, which our politicians have proved it not to be, they could have easily waited till when the Super Eagles gathered for the Nelson Mandela challenge or the Malawi World Cup qualifier so there will be a form of direct communication instead of the alleged text message. What more, the Stephen Keshi led technical crew were probably expected to spank the players or caution them, hence their own part of the blame game. And then NFF were seen to be wrong just for the lack of proper communication with the team and not for the proper lapses! Unfortunately, Nigeria is a place where one who stands for his rights is seen as a rebel. One is expected to stay mute and take every form of bullshit thrown at him. This is not the first time issues as this is coming up within the football ranks of the country. Keshi was accused of being a mafia leader during his time as Super Eagles captain; Sunday Oliseh was accused of being a rebel leader. On the other hand, Jay Jay Okocha and Joseph Yobo were accused by the the Nigerian football community as being NFF pawns. An allegation which the veracity cannot be ascertained.
Nigerians cry daily for leaders who will work with their interests at heart but obviously don't want the Eagles to have a leader who will work for the interest of  his team mates. Very hypocritical indeed. In as much as I don't support un patriotic and irrational actions by sportsmen or anybody at that, I won't subscribe to labeling the players and officials rebels because they stood to ask for their entitlements or ungrateful because they were just rewarded for winning AFCON but went ahead to ask for their entitlements. These footballers and indeed sportsmen have careers to protect as that is their source of livelihood. That is what put food on their tables and roofs over their heads. Treat them well and I feel they will respond accordingly. NFF is the bane of Nigerian football. Their insincerity and insconsistency is legendary. Every house should be put in order. When this is done, every erring party will be identified and subsequently reprimanded.

Nigeria's D'Tigers see off Mali in the Men's Afro Basketball Championship

In the group game involving Nigeria and Mali in the ongoing Afro Basketball Men's Championship in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivore, Nigeria beat their west African neighbours 74 - 59.
In a very captivating game that saw both sides constantly run the length of the court, both countries gave good account of themselves. Bundy, led the onslaught from the Malian side while the Aminu brothers, Abdulwahab and Alfarouk, and Ike Diogu countered from the Nigerian side. At the end, the Aminu's chalked up 27 points between them, Diogu came up with 19. The Malian Bundy came up with 21 points.
The Coach Ayodele Bakare tutored men are in the group with Cameroun, Congo and the Malians whom they saw off today.

Nigerian League Management Committee lands Supersports deal.

The League Management Committee announced that it had brokered a $34 million deal with Supersports, expected to run from 2015 to 2019. This comes at the back of promises made by the LMC Chairman, Nduka Irabor, to better the lot of the Nigerian League. He spoke of the dedication of  his committee to take the Nigerian League to greater heights.
To Nigerian football league fans, this is a welcome development as more money will be channelled into the league. Nduka Irabor and the General Manager of Supersports in Nigeria, Felix Awogu, presented the package to the Minister of Sports, Bola Abdullahi. An obviously elated Minister congratulated the NFF President, Aminu Maigari and the LMC Chairman, Irabor on the development.
Irabor said the contents of the deal meant that Nigerians will have the opportunity to watch six matches every week. And it is expected that since the contract runs through till 2019, the Nigerian staff of Supersports are at least sure to keep their jobs till 2019. Also, Supersports will give the LMC $2 million at the beginning of every season, expected to form the running cost.
Football lovers across the country are optimistic that televising the matches will put the organisers of the league on their toes and help eradicate the many traces of corruption especially as has to do with officiating.
Nigerian league exudes quality of play. It's high time it came on air. Kudos to the League Management Committee.

Nigerian Sports and mother luck.

From Algiers '90, through Barcelona '92, Senegal '92, Tunisia ' 94, USA '94, Atlanta '96 and up until the recently concluded IAAF Championship in Moscow, Nigeria have banked more on luck than rewards of adequate preparations, for success. Those successes too, it must be said, came as a result of the sheer resilience exhibited by the athletes who were eager make a name for themselves.
We have heard cases of funds released to federations or athletes just weeks, or even days prior to an event. In some cases too, these athletes are made to bear the cost of almost everything involved. And some Nigerians, knowing these things, crucify them on the alter of non patriotism, saying they should be happy representing the nation. What a shame. The national colours they wear will put food on their tables, pay their bills and improve their standards of living? It all boils down to the corruption that is now a part of the Nigerian culture, embedded into the system by the ruling class. Nigeria have a lot of athletes representing other nations. Francis Obikwelu, Christine Ohurogu, Gabriel Agbonlahor and Carlton Cole are just a few names we lost to other nations.
The day Nigeria adopt the method of adequate preparation that has been so effective for Jamaica, USA, China, Germany, Spain and indeed the rest of them; put round pegs in round holes and stop banking on mother luck who is now tired of Nigeria and her sporting methods, few nations,if any, can stand us. We have the human and material resources. Corruption, remains the problem.
Sports is an instrument of unity in Nigeria and therefore should not be toyed with. Adequate preparations will take us beyond where mother luck will abandon us. Moreso, mother luck is tired of Nigeria, her sports and sporting methods.

Roberto Di Matteo visits the National Stadium Surulere, Lagos.

Chelsea's UEFA champions league coach, Roberto Di Matteo was in Nigeria last week and visited the national stadium, Surulere, Lagos
state.
He met with the players and staff of Collins Edwin Sports Club. The club President, Chief Osy Edwin Nwokeabia, Director of Admin, Mr. Paul Maduakor and the Chief Coach, Uche Ugwu, were on hand to receive him.  The grassroot club, well famed for producing players in both the Nigerian league and abroad, are a foremost grassroot sports club headquatered in Lagos, and give aspiring sportsmen opportunuities to excel in their chosen careers. Di Matteo's visit will most definitely inspire the club to greater heights.

What with the Nigerian Professional Football League. 2

In a particular case, security officials joined hands with a home team to disrupt play after the visiting team scored a second goal and the game was abandoned.
The quality of play is near excellent, I dare say. If it wasn't, players such as Sunday Mba, Azubuike Egwuekwe, Gabriel Reuben, Mohammed Gambo, Godfrey Oboabona, Chigozie Agbim and co, would not have been drafted into the Super Eagles from the Nigerian league.
The organization is poor. Very poor. Corruption runs in the veins of the organisers and indeed the organization. Corporate sponsors aren't given tax rebate, ie, if indeed they pay taxes at all.
Some things can be put in place to make the league attractive. Tax rebates should be granted sponsors; state of the stadia should be of paramount importance; adequate security should be provided; the welfare of officials should be placed under the care of the central organizers etc.
Indeed, the Nigerian league has not been disappointing in terms of play, though can be better. When a good organization is ensured, every other thing will fall into place.

What, with the Nigerian Professional Football League? Part 1

A lot has been said about the Nigerian football league. Impressions have been made. Some right and some wrong. In some cases you don't blame the owners of the erroneous impressions. In other cases, these erroneous cases are either not true or they are entirely based on here say.
As a kid, my father, an ardent fan of Enugu Rangers used to tell me stories of  Sylvanus Okpala, Aloysius Atuegbu, Teslim Balogun, Christian Chukwu and a host of others. His stories first aroused my interest in Nigerian football. Growing up in the University town of Nsukka and almost always in Enugu turned me to a fan of Enugu Rangers. I started going for their games. I watched such classic games as Rangers vs 3SC, Iwuanyanwu Nationale, Stationary Stores etc. I remember when Rangers signed central defender Etim Oyobio from Kwara. It was a celebrated signing as he was a good baller and nicknamed 'the assasin'. His pairing with Joseph Enakhaire was legendary in The coal city.
After a while, the Nigerian football league lost its appeal.
Today,a lot of things are wrong with the league. However, the quality of play is not one of them. The league still offers quality in terms of play. However, the officiating is most often than not, an eye sore. That may not change in the nearest future. A situation where the home team takes care of the welfare of officials is the single factor responsible for the poor officiating. As a referee, knowing that the home team determines your pay, it becomes a thing of morals if your officiate fairly. Because in Nigeria where corruption is the order of the day, the official will loose his wage in a situation where the home team looses the game. Not in all cases though. In most.
That brings us to the second issue; security in stadia. Security personnel deployed to game venues get there and become spectators. They abandon their primary duties and focu on the game. In some cases, you see them cheering a team.

Moyes off to a good start.

Two early goals in either half by Robin Van Persie handed new manager,David Moyes his first silverware as United manager.
The United hitman released Evra on the left flank and still stepped up to head home from Evra's cross.
Wigan's James Mclean ran the left flank effectively and nearly assisted new boy,Holt, but who failed to turn up early at the rear post. Owen Coyle's men battled back into the game later in the half but were unlucky not to score.
United's mister consistent,Michael Carrick in posting a man of the match appearance paired in central midfield with Tom Cleverly. They had Mcarthur on the other side to counter them but the United lads smiled last. Rafael in right back for United was injured early in the half and was replaced by Chris Smalling. Grant Holt posed a serious physical threat to United's returning captain,Nemanja Vidic, whose presence added confidence and stability to the team.
Early in the second half,a Robin Van Persie's low shot was deflected by James Perch above Scot Carson for United's second. From there, there was no coming back for Wigan.
Substitutions were made by both sides but the tempo of the game remained the same. Wigan gave a pretty good account of themselves but couldn't cap it up with a goal as Manchester United's goalkeeper,David de Gea remained unthreatened.
Antonio Valencia's number 7 was missing at the back of his jersey as it was replaced by his erstwhile number 25. It was later confirmed that the player requested for the change in jersey number.
The game ended after four minutes of extra time for David Moyes lifting his first trophy.

First lithmus test for Manchester United

As Manchester United prepare to file out against FA cup winners, Wigan Atheletic, every football enthusiast will want to see how United fare in what is perceived to be United's first major battle in the post Ferguson era. Wigan, led by new coach Owen Coyle will want to prove that their giant killing journey to the cup victory was no fluke.
United enter the game in the middle of a raging row that centres on alleged want away striker, Wayne Rooney. How United fare without  Rooney who is said to have a shoulder injury will be seen after 90 minutes.
Wigan, who have lost their coach, Roberto Martinez and key striker Arouna Kone, both to Everton, will be looking to show their might despite being relegated at the end of last season.
