Our alleged N16,000,000 per month coach and the unending Nigerian Sports confusion.
You see, in Nigeria we never learn. It is a popular saying that experience is the best teacher. I believe though, that a wise man should learn from other people's mistakes. In Nigeria with regard to Sports, we have had personal experiences to teach every country on earth and even nations yet uncarved. Yet, we wallow is a shit hole of mistakes.
The Nigerian Football Federation gleefully announced Mr Gernot Rohr, German national, former Bordeaux, Young Boys, Etoile du Sahel, Niger and Burkina Faso Supremo as the new Super Eagles Manager. He equally played for Bayern Munich and Bordeaux in his days of hot blood. The announcement laid to rest, many months of speculation over the vacant Super Eagles Manager position. Maybe not the top notch Manager some Nigerians expected but still not an entirely bad choice owing to his knowledge of African football. It is however alleged that he is to pocket a monthly salary of $40,000. Guy, nwoke go collect 40k USD per month. On top wetin time dey talk for we country now, e nor pure!
Late Stephen Keshi was owed for many months but he kept working. That is, until he could take it no more and so spoke out. I cannot authoritavely say what Big Boss' salary was but I can bet it was nothing compared to what we want to pay Mr. Gernot. Is it not us again? Our penchant for disrespecting our own is second to none. Late Keshi was owed that much because he was one of us. A Carlito or Scolari will not be owed for one second. The fact that Nigeria did not end her disrespect for Keshi when he left the seat but extended it to his grave is a story for another day. A friend wanted to justify the pay by saying the man agreed to live in Nigeria. Where im for live before? For that pay believe me he will become more Nigerian than me. I do not care if it is the Sports Ministry or the NFF sourcing for the funds I just know that the money is too much for a Gernot. Convince a Felipe Scolari or Carlo Ancelotti to come for that amount maybe we use their name + past achievements to attempt a justification. Brother, at the present exchange rate he will be taking home N16,000,000 p/month. For that amount I will qualify Nigeria for 2018, 2022 and 2026 World Cup in one play off!
We can afford to pay our new Manager an alleged $40,000 per month but owe our local coaches and players to a point of irritation. And when they speak out we call them rebels. Not fair at all. I also hope their is an agreement in place for him to work with Yusuf Salisu and Imama Amapakabo.
Until we overhaul our entire sports system in Nigeria, we can never get it right. Let us see how the 2018 World Cup journey goes. If a player doesn't head, trap or shoot the ball effectively, I will quickly remember how much we are paying our coach and lay the blame squarely on our sports administrators.
