Messi and Cristiano who?

If Argentina, for logistic reasons had to extend their return flight to Beunos Aires and Portugal decides to leave Russia immediately, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo may have had goodbye shakes at the airport. The significance of Portugals' and Argentina's exit is the uneventful sending home of Leo and CR7.

I have never been one to join the raging debate on either of the two being the best to have played the game because I believe none is. My ranking hasn't changed; Ronaldinho, Zidane and JJ Okocha. These ones in my opinion, lit up every game they played irrespective of the result. That is by the way.

Portugal run out of ideas whenever Cristiano isn't 'in a game'. Man turned up against Spain and Morrocco so Portugal won with him in the forefront. Against Uruguay, it simply didn't work For him and Portugal. For Argentina, Messi didn't come for the World Cup. He 'tried' but it just didn't work. He only turned up against Nigeria where he scored his only goal of the tournament. Like I said, Messi was absent.
The two have been on the glittering front pages of football for a little over one decade. They remain good players who will probably still turn up superbly for one more season. Other players whom I rank just below the two and a few new kids have come up the block. The 2018 World Cup is throwing them up but one stands out.
